Task 3 - P3/M2/D2 - Understand the Relationship between a Media Product and their Target Audience

A) Age

The show is definitely unsuitable for people under the age of 16 because it includes a lot of realistic scenes that include torture, sex, violence and swearing. Many people may like the show due to these aspects because it makes the show much more realistic. Game Of Thrones is most watched by young adults between the age of 18 and 29 which i think is their target audience. This may be because of the genres that are chosen for the series. Young adults enjoy shows and films with action and realistic aspects which they experience in the real world as well as a mixture of romance. I think they also want to appeal it to the ages of 30 to 45 by adding political aspects which is a very popular topic within groups of people within these ages but, Game Of Thrones is better suited for younger adults because they have more free time as its rare for younger people to be in higher management and have no free time.

B) Gender

Game Of Thrones is targeted towards both males and females because the story includes a lot of characters that come from all different backgrounds that both genders will like and connect to. The story includes a range of genres and elements such as romance, political, conspiracy, drama, violence and fantasy. Game Of Thrones if full of brutal realism and realistic gore which may attract more males than females because not many females enjoy violence. Females however, will enjoy the romantic side of Game Of Thrones.

C) Lifestyle

Game Of Thrones is targeted to audiences of explorers and strugglers. Explorers are people who are seeking discovery and values adventure and experience such as students and young adults. The show attracts these people because it also has books which has a lot more information and much more of the story included so they enjoy searching for more. The TV show itself includes a lot of characters who go through many challenges just as young people do in the real world so, its easy to connect to certain characters. An explorers interests may be reading, socialising and using social media because they are open minded and still learning about the world around them as well enjoying different media such as films/TV and social media. Strugglers are people who are in need of an escape from the real world and don't have any life or job goals they're working towards so they have a lot of free time. These types of people enjoy seeing how characters evolve and grow throughout the show because they see them and wish that for themselves. There is a character called Sam who gone from being abused by his family mentally and being shamed to being one of the warriors of the Nightwatch who defends the land. Watching this character inspires strugglers to changer their lifestyle. A strugglers interests would be binge watching shows, gaming and most likely prefer being alone.

D) Spending Power

Game Of Thrones is said to be liked by people who are apart of the C2DE social class which includes manual workers, semi skilled manual workers, students, pensioners and unemployed. I agree that manual workers enjoy Game Of Thrones because they have more free time than people that work in higher management such as doctors and lawyers. However, the series is not targeted to pensioners because the story is very difficult to follow and includes a lot of violence which they may not enjoy. Because there is so many episodes, you need a lot of free time to watch it which is why the unemployed, casual workers and students that are apart of the letter code E are the majority of the audience

Katz & Bulmer theory - Uses and Gratifications

The theory is split into 4 parts:

1. Escape and Diversion - This part is someone who wants to escape from everyday life because it allows them to get involved in a whole other story and forget about their own issues.

2. Surveillance and Information - Using media to find out what is happening in other countries, cities and towns around the world.

3. Personal Identity - Using media to find out by yourself by relating to models of behaviour. Watching a character in a show who you can relate to.

4. Personal Relationship - When a person uses media to become a part of a social group and from relationships by watching something that is a common topic.

Escape and Diversion - The Katz & Bulmer theory can be applied to Game Of Thrones because lots of people can watch it to escape from the real world with its very unique and diverse story and world which drags you in to it. Its an easy world to fall in live with due to the characters and the events that occur.

Surveillance and Information - Game Of Thrones cant be used to find out about whats happening in the world because its made purely for entertainment. Documentaries and News channels are used for surveillance and information.

Personal Identity - Game Of Thrones has a wide variety of unique characters that come from different backgrounds and, they all grow and develop throughout the show which makes it very easy for you to connect with the characters that relate to you in some way. They watch how each character develops and lives their life in the show and this can inspire or open individuals minds on the way they could change or live personally.

Personal Relationships - Game Of Thrones and social media is very popular with young adults so its no surprise that many people talk about it with each other on social media or in a social situation so, its common for people to know of Game Of Thrones through their friends. People will watch it to be able to get included in conversations socially or to make relationships with people.
